Venue: Chichester Cathedral
We mark the 399th anniversary of the death of Thomas Weelkes (1576–1623) by performing most of his wonderful music for viols, together with pieces for viols and voices and unaccompanied anthems performed with the Choir of Chichester Cathedral, the cathedral where Weelkes was organist and informatur choristorum from 1602 until his death. This is a FREE lunchtime concert (with retiring collection), part of a short residency for the Roses at Chichester, where we will record a CD of Weelkes' music ready for the 400th anniversary of his death next year. The programme includes Weelkes’ In Nomines and pavans, verse anthems with specially created viol parts derived from existing organ parts, and ‘Most mighty and all-knowing Lord’, his only surviving piece for solo voice and viols.
We gratefully thank the CONTINUO FOUNDATION for financial support for our Weelkes Project.
