1540 saw Italian musicians arriving at Henry VIII’s court, bringing with them a consort of recently developed viols. We trace their influence in establishing the viol consort at the centre of Elizabethan and Jacobean music making, as later generations of these immigrants helped to create an English taste for all things Italian.
