2023 marks the 400th anniversary of the death of William Byrd, England’s finest composer before Purcell. The programme, performed with Martha McLorinan (mezzo-soprano), celebrates Byrd’s chamber music, including inventive fantasias in three to five parts, tuneful dances, and In nomines based on plainchant, alongside songs of joy and sadness: some celebrate Queen Elizabeth I while others mark the passing of his friends and patrons.
