John Dowland’s ground-breaking set of Lachrimae, published in 1604 describes ‘teares’ as not always being shed ‘in sorrowe, but sometime in joy and gladnesse’. Here we explore Dowland’s world through his dances, together with music by composers he met on his travels in Italy, Denmark and Germany , concluding with the ‘Seaven Passionate Pavans’ that he based on his famous song ‘Flow my teares’, which form a deeply moving sequence unique at the time they were written.
